Email marketing software trends: dated signals and how to test each one
Email marketing software trends backed by dated signals: embedded AI, multichannel suites, faster triggers, packaging changes, first-party events, analytics and portability.
Key terms used below
- Dated signal:an observed change tied to a known date, not a guaranteed future release.
- Bounded response:a limited, reversible action that tests a trend before wider commitment.
- Embedded AI:software features for generation, prediction, timing, segmentation, or assistance.
- Multichannel consolidation:bringing email together with other communication or commerce functions in one suite.
- Declared choice:a subscriber preference or permission that has been recorded.
- Trigger integrity:control of event order, duplicates, retries, cancellation, and message pressure.
- Decision-grade measurement:analytics based on accessible events, stable definitions, and uncertainty checks.
- Portability:the ability to export, interpret, and delete data while preserving usable processes outside a vendor.
Begin with the dated signal
Treat each dated signal as evidence for a bounded response, not as a promise of what a vendor will ship. Test its relevance against customers, use cases, markets, staff, data, and risk before committing budget. The discipline in email marketing strategy best practices helps put that test ahead of purchasing.
Bulk-sender authentication rules from Gmail and Yahoo took effect in February 2024. Google introduced a one-click unsubscribe requirement for bulk senders in June 2024, and Gmail set a 0.3% spam-rate ceiling. These dates provide context, not proof of a product release or an equal impact on every program.
| Signal | Existing market examples | Evidence to inspect and bounded response |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded AI | HubSpot, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Braze, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign | Inputs, errors, logs, and controls; pilot one reversible task |
| Multichannel consolidation | Klaviyo, Braze, Attentive, Postscript, OneSignal | Permission, contact pressure, and cost; fund a use case with demonstrated value |
| Faster triggers | Customer.io, Iterable, Braze | Event order, duplicates, and rollback; test failures before increasing speed |
| Packaging changes | Brevo, Kit, Mailchimp, MailerLite | Usage and renewal scenarios; keep an exit route viable |
| APIs | SendGrid, Mailgun, Twilio | Fit with the intended work and operating requirements |
Some product facts behind the table are public. Klaviyo and Braze sell email together with SMS and other channels. Brevo is the name Sendinblue adopted in 2023, and Kit is the name ConvertKit adopted in 2024, both examples of packaging and positioning changes. HubSpot introduced its Breeze AI tools in 2024, and Mailchimp is part of Intuit, which uses its own assistant features. Check each vendor's current documentation, because features and plans change.
These examples are market illustrations, not endorsements or proof of suitability. Compare email automation tools against the actual work expected, then use the evidence and bounded-response columns to decide whether a limited test is justified. The relevant choice depends on the task and operating constraints.

Give declared choices a clear purpose
Declared choices become useful when a recorded preference or permission has a clear purpose in a journey. First-party events can support relevance, but collecting more does not make an event useful. Preserve source, notice, purpose, time, identity, correction, retention, inference, and deletion alongside the event.
In July 2024, Google said it would not remove third-party cookies from Chrome; that announcement does not establish that every event is relevant or reliable. Decide which events support a journey and which preferences govern use, then monitor quarterly journey metrics that reflect the intended outcome.
Keep triggers safe as they accelerate
Trigger integrity matters because real-time messages can be timely while also amplifying failures involving duplicate identity, late events, permission, competing events, and retries. The 0.3% spam-rate ceiling set by Gmail for bulk senders is a reminder that platform measures can constrain automation; speed is not by itself a successful journey.
Before delays are shortened, test event order, idempotency, cancellation, priority, total message pressure, pausing, rollback, and safe degradation. Use journey-level automation trends to identify signals worth checking, then put controls in automation release checks. A passing trigger test does not establish that the complete journey is safe.
Extend reach only when permission fits
Multichannel consolidation combines email with options such as SMS, messaging, push, chat, advertising sync, sales, or commerce. A unified suite may reduce interfaces, yet it can concentrate dependency and make it easier to raise contact pressure across channels without a clear view of the full journey.
The U.S. Telephone Consumer Protection Act requires prior express written consent for many marketing texts. Before expansion, check channel-specific permission, cost, identity, quiet hours, measurement, suppression, and exit arrangements. Compare CASL requirements with California rules when considering jurisdiction-specific consent.
Put embedded AI to a defined task
Embedded AI covers generation, prediction, send timing, segmentation, and assistance inside software. Evaluate a defined task rather than feature presence: establish the data used, how outputs are reviewed, which permissions apply, what is logged, and how the function can be stopped.
The EU AI Act entered into force in August 2024 and sets risk-based obligations that may affect email AI features. Require evidence for data use, evaluation, access controls, human approval, change logs, deletion, incident handling, and an off switch. Convenience does not move accountability away from the team using the feature.
Use qualified legal and security review where needed, and assess each feature against its intended task and the data involved.
Make measurement useful for a decision
Make procurement decision-grade by considering privacy, security, analytics, and plan costs alongside features. The EU GDPR has applied since May 2018 and sets data protection duties; public badges alone do not replace current evidence and contractual commitments reviewed by qualified people.
Check data locations, subprocessors, support access, retention, deletion, single sign-on, audit logs, incident handling, and vendor AI use. These are procurement requirements, not just policy statements. Teams shaping strategy development should match controls and contracts to the markets and data involved.
For analytics, favor verified tasks, raw event access, scanner handling, stable identifiers, holdouts, incrementality, contribution, uncertainty, and versioned metrics over open-led dashboards. Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. Test export and independent reproduction before relying on vendor reports; email analytics can frame the questions.
Current Brevo, Kit, Mailchimp, and MailerLite pages illustrate differences in contact, send, seat, feature, channel, and condition tiers. Free tiers and send limits differ widely between these vendors and change often. Model usage and renewal scenarios against needs, and consult planning benchmarks rather than treating a tier as a fixed cost.
Keep portability within reach
Portability means preparing for a possible change even when a team expects to remain with its current vendor. The EU Data Act entered into force in January 2024 and includes portability measures that make export and migration readiness relevant procurement questions.
Use stable identifiers, governed campaign parameters, external metric definitions, versioned automation documentation, complete APIs, standard exports, and tested deletion. These measures can reduce migration cost. Compare intended use, data control, vendor portability, and a tested exit before committing to a larger program.
Use these checks before widening a trend beyond a limited test:
- Define the customer task, market, and evidence that would justify a change.
- Pilot one reversible task, limiting its data, permissions, and cost.
- Test event order, duplicates, cancellation, retries, pause, and rollback.
- Check measurement, usage and renewal scenarios, and named ownership.
- Verify export, deletion, and a viable exit before making a larger commitment.
No trend is certain to matter equally across vendors, customers, markets, laws, threats, business models, and implementation. Do not buy only because software includes AI. Require verified value that justifies data, error, control, cost, and dependency risks, with owners, acceptance criteria, monitoring, training, privacy and security review, budget triggers, portability, and rollback.
